Hey, Didn't This Used to Be Popular?
Cray weighs in on the current WWE product... remember, Smackdown doesn't count in Andyville

Is RAW a rerun?

It seems WWE Creative figured the most "creative" thing to be doing with their time was watching 24/7... uh.... 24/7. I can't diss on them for that. At least they're acknowledging the past. At least they seem to be attempting to get a grasp on the product of days gone by. The problem lies in that, instead of creating new ideas from the old, they would rather present old ideas as if they were new. Nostalgia can be good, but you can't base the bulk of the product on it. With that said, lets see what's happening on the only real (current) WWE brand that counts: RAW.

Road to EXTREME

Yes folks, One Night Stand returns this year, and the title now makes no sense. We had a One Night Stand last year, so shouldn't this be the second night stand, or is ECW now our f*** buddy? I'd go with the latter, considering the plans for a full (at least as full as Heat or Velocity are full) ECW brand revival. I think one morning, Vince just woke up and thought, "I own that garbage wrestling promotion, I might as well make some money off of it!" So, this year will be the rebirth, and most likely the redeath of the little promotion that ultimately couldn't. ECW is going to need some fresh blood. I don't think they're going to be able to carry the promotion on the backs of guys like Funker at this point, seeing as he currently makes Mick Foley look like Paul London in the ring. Hey, Paul London, there's a good idea. Actually, why don't we just move the cruiserweight division to ECW? Wait, I've got a better idea! Why don't we just get rid of Smackdown and replace it with ECW? The Smackdown roster is so shallow right now, you can walk in it wearing sandals and not get your toes wet. Anyway, I've gotten off topic.

DX is back!

Most people have heard by now about the early release of some promotional material regarding the return of DX. The only thing this information really serves to do is keep one from thinking the blatantly obvious DX return storyline is just a bait-and-switch. So, we really are getting a DX reunion. Oddly enough, I really don't have much to say on this. I like it, but I don't want them to screw it up. I'll leave it at that.

JR is back!

It was only a matter of time before they had to put him back where he belonged... and honestly, unless I really think about it, I don't even remember that he was gone. I don't mean he's not important to the show. I mean RAW always sounded odd with Joey Styles screaming the welcome at the beginning of the show. JR is the voice of RAW. He's back, so all is well in WWE land. Plus, JR's return to the booth was heralded the week before by Joey Styles giving one of the best promos I've ever seen. With the exception of the attempt for cheap heel heat when he took a shot at the marks, I'd venture to say that this was a near perfect promo.

The Champ is....

Cena is actually just getting away from being a tagalong to the DX vs McMahonism storyline. Now he gets to be a tagalong to the ECW storyline! The good news: the fans aren't waiting outside of arenas with nooses, tar, and feathers anymore. Hmmm, it seems like the secret formula to make fans stop booing Cena is to just ignore him, despite the fact that he is the WWE Champion. Hey, if it works, it works. Anyway, Monday night, RVD said he was going to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase at One Night Stand against Cena for the WWE Title. This booking seems weak, and unless they do some major buildup in the next couple of weeks, it's just going to be one of those "eh" moments.
I was expecting Mysterio to drop the World Heavyweight Title at Judgement Day to JBL, leading up to RVD challenging for it at One Night Stand. This would have played off of JBL's feud with ECW last year, and would have allowed me to fancy the thought that they might actually let RVD win. In my scenario, the World Heavyweight Championship (with all its icky WCW heritage) would become the ECW World Heavyweight Title, and be the focal point of the new ECW brand. Granted, this would also rely on the Smackdown brand collapsing, but you can't blame me for a little wishful thinking.
However, that didn't go down. RVD is taking on Cena for the WWE Title. I really doubt RVD goes over, and if he does, I can NOT see the WWE Title being part of the ECW brand. I just don't think WWE is committed enough to this whole ECW idea to do anything crazy like that. Did you notice that this rant about Cena being ignored and overshadowed by other storylines ultimately ended in Cena getting ignored and overshadowed by another storyline? Wow.

Umaga

Now he's the "Samoan Bulldozer." That's just wonderful. I guess they didn't have the... como se dice.... cajones to keep using the nickname "The Samoan Smashing Machine." Seriously, they said that. Check the tapes a few weeks back. I laughed my ass off at how close they were able to come to saying "Samoan Submission Machine" without actually saying it. By the way, is every new wrestler that comes out of Samoa a "machine" of some type? Have they just become a race of robots now?

"Gimme an S!" "S" "..uh s?" "Q!" "What's my line?"

I hate the Spirit Squad. For the love of crap, this gimmick sucks! What makes it worse is that these guys half-ass it so bad that even if it was a good gimmick, it wouldn't get over. Sure, there are a few odd folks that love the Spirit Squad. Seriously... there are... just like some people liked Napoleon Dynamite. Some people have no taste. The vast majority of fans, though, don't even give the Spirit Squad heel heat, they give them "go away" heat. That's not good. One of the biggest flaws I see is that these guys are so inept in the execution of their cheerleader gimmick, that no 4 of them at a time can chant in unison. 10000 people can chant "You suck", "Shave your back", or "Edge Speared Lita" in unison, but these guys can't deliver a 30 second scripted cheer in unison? Every time they try, it's a train wreck. Can't they practice a little backstage? It's just friggin sad!

In other news

I just wanted to mention that Andyville has been back up in the new version 3.x for a full year come tomorrow, and Ninja Andy has still failed to get us sued (although it appears he has tried). Well done! I think this addition to this article is as much fanfare as we're going to give it. Bully!
