Andyville vs Your Browser

So, Andyville looks screwed up in your browser? That's sad. As we tried to do somewhat successfully with the pre-3.0 Andyville, we are attempting to get a good deal of browser compatibility, while not having multiple versions of the same page floating around on our site for different browsers. We're trying with the limited options we have. We achieved a reasonable amount of compatibility while in the beta stage, so now it's just down to optimization and dealing with flukey behavior.
Anyway, here's a list of the basic things that make Andyville tick that we expect your browser to TRY to use:

JavaScript
Man, we use a lot of JavaScript. It's actually through some JavaScript trickery that we can administer the site far easier and publish new articles far faster. PHP or ASP(.NET) would be far better for this purpose, but since our uber-public site is hosted on atspace, we can't use it. They don't support server-side scripting, or even server-side includes for that matter. Thus, since they don't support it, and since I really like having them as a host, we're just going to have to JavaScript the hell out of everything! However, We are working to make the site at least usable by someone without JavaScript. It just won't be quite as fancy.

CSS
Cascading Stylesheets have been around a few years, and the implementations are a little bit closer to being standardized.... but still far from standardized enough. Currently, the front page title code branches two ways depending if you have an IE browser or anything else. Zillas and the such don't get the crazy flying crap title (lucky them, right?) that IE users do. Other than that, CSS usage is pretty basic.

REALLY Basic Stuff
Do you have images turned off, or some other ridiculous setting that takes the flavor out of the entire internet? I'm not even dealing with that.

Pretty simple stuff, right? Well, we're working on support for whatever we can get our hands on (to an extent), so here is our support table, to be filled in further as more time is put into research, and as we improve (or possibly damage) our site. Enjoy!

Browser Support

Configurations Attempted
Browser Operating System Compatibility Reasoning
IE 6 Windows 9x, 2000, XP Full
Firefox 1.0.3 Windows XP Full through alternate code paths Issues with DHTML title necessitated an alternate title area for non-IE browsers
Firefox 1.0.6 Damn Small Linux 2.2 Full through alternate code paths Issues with DHTML title necessitated an alternate title area for non-IE browsers
Mozilla 1.4 Knoppix 3.3 Full through alternate code paths Issues with DHTML title necessitated an alternate title area for non-IE browsers
Konqueror 3.1.3 Knoppix 3.3 Full through alternate code paths Issues with DHTML title necessitated an alternate title area for non-IE browsers
Dillo 0.7.3 & 0.8.5 Knoppix 3.3 & DSL 2.2 Yikes, this is seriously ugly, but mostly readable Doesn't seem to support JavaScript or CSS, has it's own ideas about color schemes, and displays pictures with ONLY either a height or width attribute without keeping aspect ratio. Making my pages compatible with Dillo is not a priority. However, with improvements made up to this writing (v3.03.03), Andyville is actually usable with Dillo! I just wouldn't recommend it.
Opera 8.52 Windows XP Full (if it identifies itself as anything other than Internet Explorer though, my script will default it to the simpler title)
Netrik DSL 2.2 Wow! Surprisingly good! Sit down for this one... one reader suggested I try Andyville in the text browser Netrik... and it actually looks pretty good! The layouts come across pretty nicely. The lack of JavaScript support and images still hurts, but overall, the content looks good and far better than Dillo.

If you've got another browser you'd like us to try Andyville with, drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.
